A discussion of the difference between rules-based IoT, also known as ‘expert systems,’ and physical models (ML/AI) for condition-based maintenance. Demonstration of both as well as a case study of a catastrophic failure caught with rules base and missed by physical modeling. We also debunk one of the most common arguments against rules-based systems – it doesn’t need a PhD…. it just means that the other folks that claim that don’t have accurate systems.
