The MotorDoc® MCSA (Motor Current Signature Analysis) system, also referred to as EMPOWER™ (Electric Motor Performance Optimization Waveform Evaluation and Recognition), is designed to facilitate the collection, analysis, visualization and automated analysis of motor current data. Specifically developed for induction electric machine and driven equipment diagnostics and prognostics, this tool assists engineers and technicians in evaluating the condition of motors using advanced signal processing techniques. By recording and analyzing motor current waveforms, the system provides insights into potential issues, such as mechanical imbalances and misalignment, rotor defects, stator defects, bearing defects, driven equipment mechanical defects including fans, pumps, belts and gearboxes, and most electrical faults.
EMPOWER technology works much like vibration analysis but utilizes the air gap magnetic field of the electric machine as the transducer. This allows the entire system to be viewed at the same time resulting in the analyst’s ability to view interactions of the system from the point of test through the machine and driven equipment.
The EMPOWER system consists of a signal conditioner and BNC ammeter probe (CT – current transformer) as well as an upload and simple analysis and reporting software. The software is a Python-based self-contained executable that is meant to introduce users to the application of current signature analysis of rotating machines. There is no need to install additional software to operate this technology. Advanced modules are, and will be, available to perform automated analysis of different types of machines and driven equipment.
