Machine Learning (AI) for Electric Machine Prognostics and RUL with Basic Motor Data (2022 IEEE Paper)

Limited applications of machine learning using basic electric motor data as sensors have been developed and applied. In this paper we will present the development of a solution for critical small machines using voltage, current, watts, temperature and related data as part of a 30-day advanced failure notification system for electrical and mechanical conditions. The project included small integrated inverter fan motors and servo motors used in critical applications which required 30-day notice where traditional prognostic equipment could not be applied. Development of the data, determination of limitations, selection of machine learning algorithms, simulation, bench testing, and field application will be presented. Techniques included the detection of power electronic, insulation, and mechanical degradation including the classification of types of failure.
